Beat The Heat

with Fresh Summer Cocktails & Entertaining Ideas

Summer means relaxed entertaining, pool parties, and meals on the grill. It’s also the perfect time to beat the heat with lighter, more refreshing cocktails. We have some great ideas to help you do just that.

Take advantage of summer’s fresh fruits.

Start by taking full advantage of the season’s fresh fruits. Strawberry daiquiris never go out of style and are always a crowd pleaser. To mix it up a bit, try strawberry mojitos instead or a blackberry mojito with tart, ripe blackberries. Nothing says summer in a glass like refreshing lemonade. Stir fresh blueberries into lemonade spiked with rosé or white wine.

Sangrias are hugely popular right now. Two of our favorite summer versions come from Delish.com. One recipe uses sweet watermelon and tart limes and another version combines everything there is to love about sangria and margaritas with summery hints of orange and lime.

Watermelon Sangria

4 cups cubed watermelon

1 750-ml bottle Moscato

1 cup rum

Juice of 4 limes

Zest of 2 limes

1 Tablespoon sugar

Lime slices for garnish

Blend all ingredients and chill before serving.

Frozen Sangria Margarita

Blend and freeze 1 cup red wine, Juice of 1 orange and 1 lime, and 2 cups ice cubes.

Prepare 1 can frozen limeade concentrate with 2 shots tequila, and 2 cups of ice. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a glass and rim the glass with salt and sugar. Alternate layers of the sangria mixture and tequila mixture in the glass.

Go beyond the expected lemon or lime slice garnish perched on the side of the glass by freezing slices of lemon, lime, orange, strawberries, or even sprigs of mint in the ice mold. Go beyond ice cubes and try ice molds that come in a wide variety of shapes, including balls, spheres, honeycomb, and flowers. We love the long rectangle shapes made to fit in a water bottle. They are perfect for freezing sprigs of mint or basil for a fragrant garnish for summer cocktails.

To get a crystal-clear ice cube, double boil water before pouring the water into the mold. Simply bring water to a boil, then let cool before bringing to a boil a second time.
